MICHAEL SOUTER: WORK IN PROGRESS
Michael Souter's painting career has been influenced by his frequent relocations, with each move adding new layers of inspiration. In San Francisco, he experimented with bold shapes and textures. Tokyo introduced the use of large-scale pieces and the suppression of color through layering black and white paint over intense hues. In New York, he explored motion and symbolic language.
A key technique in Souter's work is layering colors, creating a surface that denies uniform flatness. He reacts to the fluidity and immediacy of paint, balancing control and relinquishing it to explore resulting tension. Non-conventional and found objects are used to create texture and patterns, eschewing traditional painter's tools. Through a process of felt experience and intuition, his non-objective works take on a life and history of their own.
